What places relate to the history of the automobile?

For many, cars are not only a means of transportation, but a symbol of the identity of Los Angeles. They have certainly left their mark on our built environment, as Los Angeles’s streetcar-established decentralization was cemented and expanded by arterial roads, freeways, and buildings that celebrated motorized motion over the course of the 20th century. Can you tell us about a drive-thru, service station, motel, car dealership, sign, road, bridge or other place related to the history of the automobile? Some of these places are notable for their architecture (e.g. programmatic buildings that were designed to look like an object). Others are notable for what they tell us about the people and events that they are associated with and their implications for the City’s urban form.

Instructions: Use the map above to zoom in and click on the location of the place. Then provide the name and information about why the place is important. Or you can click on “What’s Your Idea” and submit the name and location of the place and information about why it is significant. We are particularly interested in places that do not already have historic designations.
